WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) today announced the students from the Eighth Congressional District of Georgia who received appointments to the United States Service Academies. The following students received a congressional nomination from Congressman Scott last year and have been selected to attend the country’s leading service academies, including the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and the Military Academy at West Point.

“These students represent our state’s best, and I am proud to represent so many talented young Georgians who desire to serve their country,” said Congressman Austin Scott. “Acceptance into a Military Service Academy is a testament to hard work and strength of character. I am confident these students will lead our military and our country to a brighter future, and I thank them for their dedication to our nation.”

The students were interviewed for Congressional Nominations by Congressman Scott’s Military Academy Board, made up of graduates from each of the service academies in addition to community leaders.  Nominees were selected based on the following criteria: academics, leadership and extracurricular, physical fitness, motivation, and interview.  Once the student receives a congressional nomination, they are then considered for an appointment by the Academy but only a small percentage will receive an official appointment.

For interested students, an application for congressional nomination can be requested on the website, and all applications must be submitted by October 16, 2016 for this year’s upcoming class. 

Upcoming juniors and seniors in Georgia’s Eighth Congressional District interested in attending one of the country’s Military Academies are encouraged to attend Congressman Scott’s Service Academy Day on September 10, 2016 in the Eagle Building at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, where representatives from all the academies, as well as the Congressman and his District Office staff, will be present to talk with interested students and parents.
