Tifton, GA – U.S. Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) today announced students from the Eighth Congressional District of Georgia have received appointments to the United States Service Academies. Eight students nominated by Scott last year have been selected to attend the country’s leading service academies, including the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, the Naval Academy at Annapolis and the Military Academy at West Point.

“These young students represent our state’s best,” said Scott. “It’s truly inspiring to see the leadership of so many young and talented Georgians who desire to serve our nation by joining the armed forces. This dedicated group will surely lead our country to a bright future.”

The students were interviewed for Congressional Nominations into the Class of 2017 by Congressman Scott and the Military Academy Board, made up of graduates from each of the service academies in addition to Middle Georgia community leaders. Nominees were selected based on the following criteria: academics, leadership and extracurricular, physical fitness, motivation and interview appearance.

For more information and specific guidelines on service academy nominations, please visit Congressman Scott’s website here. For interested students, an application for congressional nomination can be found on the website, and all applications must be submitted by October 25, 2013.

Upcoming juniors and seniors in Georgia’s 8th District interested in attending one of the country’s Military Academies are encouraged to attend this year’s Service Academy Day on September 14, 2013 at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, where representatives from all the academies will be present to talk with interested students and parents.
