Votes in favor of H.R. 6365, National Security and Job Protection Act

Washington D.C. – U.S. Representative Austin Scott (GA-08) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6365, National Security and Job Protection Act. An overview of the legislation is included below Rep. Scott’s quote:

“Today I voted in favor of the National Security and Job Protection Act. I voted against sequestration last year and I will continue to work towards solutions that strengthen our national defense and protect our Georgia communities from the potentially debilitating effect of sequestration.”

Under current law, there will be across-the-board cuts, known as a “sequester,” imposed on January 2, 2013, resulting in a 10% reduction in Department of Defense programs and an 8% reduction in certain domestic programs, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and education programs.

In May 2012, the House passed H.R. 5652, the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012. This legislation replaced the sequester for 2013 with a series of spending cuts and spending reforms. More info on H.R. 5652 SRRA: http://budget.house.gov/reconciliation/

The National Security and Job Protection Act provides that upon enactment of H.R. 5652, the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012, or similar legislation that offsets the cost of the automatic across-the-board defense and non-defense discretionary spending cuts, the sequester for Fiscal Year 2013 is repealed.

Additionally, the legislation requires that by October 15, 2012, the President submit a plan to replace the sequester with alternative savings.
