WARNER ROBINS, GA – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Austin Scott (GA-08) recognized Amelia Day, 18, a member of the Houston County 4-H Club, upon her being selected as the national winner for the 2017 4-H Youth In Action Award for Citizenship. Day receives the award for her leadership as founder of Operation: Veteran Smiles (OVS), a community service initiative she started at age 13. She will receive a $5,000 scholarship and will serve as spokesperson for the 4-H Citizenship program.

“Our young people are certainly the future of our state, and supporting them and recognizing their successes are key to keeping our communities strong and thriving,” said Rep. Scott. “I am proud to recognize Amelia for the leadership she’s shown in her community as a member of the 4-H Club in Houston County through starting a community service project aiding veterans. She’s a bright young woman, and I look forward to seeing her continued growth and success.”

The 4-H Youth in Action awards highlight youth in each of the 4-H core areas of Agriculture, Citizenship, Healthy Living and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These four pillars represent the fields in which 4-H youth excel on a national level and align with the mission mandates of the National 4-H Council.

Day was officially recognized as the 2017 4-H Youth in Action Pillar Winner for Citizenship at the National 4-H Council Legacy Awards in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Other winners of the award include Samuel Sugarman, California 4-H’er and Agriculture pillar winner; Ava Lonneman, Ohio 4-H’er and STEM pillar winner; and Bryanne Sanchez, California 4-H’er and Healthy Living pillar winner.
